Civil Society Resistance

How journalists, judges, activists, and ordinary citizens push back against democratic erosion, and what makes resistance effective.

How Societies Fight Back

Democratic erosion is not inevitable. In country after country, civil society organizations, independent media, judiciaries, and ordinary citizens have pushed back against authoritarian overreach. The forms of resistance vary, but patterns emerge across successful cases.

Independent media plays a critical role. In Hungary, despite Orban's near-total capture of traditional media, independent outlets like Telex and 444.hu maintain investigative journalism funded by reader subscriptions and international donors. In the Philippines, Maria Ressa's Rappler continued reporting despite legal harassment. In Turkey, independent digital media like Medyascope operates despite government pressure. In each case, journalists have adapted to hostile environments by going digital, diversifying funding, and building international solidarity networks.
