Challenges Facing Indian Democracy
The pressures on Indian democracy — from communalism and media capture to institutional erosion and economic inequality.
Pressures on Indian Democracy
India's democracy faces several intersecting challenges. Communalism — the political mobilisation of religious identity, particularly Hindu-Muslim tensions — has intensified, with critics arguing that the ruling BJP's Hindu nationalist ideology threatens the secular foundations of the republic. Supporters counter that secularism as practised in India unfairly privileged minorities.
Media independence is under pressure: India has dropped significantly in press freedom rankings, with concerns about government-friendly ownership concentration, intimidation of critical journalists, and the use of sedition and national security laws against reporters. Institutional independence — of the Election Commission, the judiciary, investigative agencies, and the Reserve Bank — is a subject of fierce debate.
