China operates the world's most sophisticated censorship and surveillance system. The Great Firewall blocks access to Google, Facebook, Twitter, Wikipedia, and many foreign news sites, while domestic platforms like WeChat, Weibo, and Douyin are subject to real-time content monitoring and censorship.

Research has shown that the system targets collective action and organisation more than criticism of leaders — the party is less concerned about people complaining than about people organising. An estimated 2 million content moderators work alongside AI systems to filter posts, and the system has become increasingly effective at detecting and removing content in near real-time.

The Surveillance State

China has deployed an estimated 600+ million surveillance cameras nationwide, many equipped with facial recognition technology. The social credit system — still evolving and more fragmented than often portrayed — aims to rate citizens and businesses on trustworthiness, with consequences like travel restrictions for those blacklisted.

The most extreme application of surveillance technology is in Xinjiang, where the Uyghur Muslim population is subject to pervasive monitoring, facial recognition checkpoints, forced biometric data collection, and mass internment in what the government calls 'vocational training centres.' The UN has described the situation as potentially constituting crimes against humanity.
