Caste and Politics
How caste shapes Indian democracy — from reservations and vote banks to caste-based parties and social movements.
Caste in Indian Democracy
The caste system — a hierarchical social structure with roots in ancient Hindu society — profoundly shapes Indian politics despite constitutional provisions against discrimination. The Constitution abolished untouchability and established reservations (affirmative action) for Scheduled Castes (Dalits), Scheduled Tribes, and Other Backward Classes (OBCs) in legislatures, government employment, and educational institutions.
Caste operates in politics through several mechanisms: parties cultivate 'vote banks' among specific caste groups; caste associations and leaders broker electoral support; and caste identity often determines candidate selection. Major caste-based parties include the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP, representing Dalits) and various OBC-focused parties across states.
