Building a MUN Career
From first-time delegate to conference chair — how to build a meaningful trajectory in Model UN.
A MUN career typically spans 2-5 years, and the most successful participants are intentional about their progression. Each stage builds skills for the next.
The Typical Arc
Year 1: Learning (Delegate) — Attend 2-3 conferences, learn procedure, give your first speeches, make mistakes. Focus on fundamentals, not awards.
Year 2: Competing (Experienced Delegate) — Attend 4-6 conferences, lead blocs, author resolutions, start winning awards. This is where strategic thinking matters most.
Year 3: Leading (Head Delegate / Secretariat) — Mentor younger delegates, lead your school's team, or join a conference's organizing committee. The skills shift from competing to coaching.
Year 4+: Giving Back (Chair / Director) — Chair committees at conferences, judge debates, train new delegates. You see the simulation from the other side.
