How BP Debates Are Judged

Understanding the judging criteria — from argument quality to speaker roles — so you can tailor your strategy to what adjudicators reward.

The Ranking System

In BP, judges rank the four teams from 1st to 4th and assign speaker scores to each individual speaker (typically on a scale of 50-100, with 75 as average). The key judging criteria are:

  • Content — the quality, depth, and originality of arguments. Are they well-reasoned with clear warrants and impacts?
  • Strategy — did each speaker fulfill their role? Did the team position itself well relative to other teams?
  • Engagement — did teams respond to each other's arguments? Was there genuine clash?
  • Manner — delivery, clarity, and persuasiveness. This matters but is weighted less than content and strategy.

The most common judging question is: 'Which team was most persuasive on the issues that mattered most in this debate?' Teams that identify and win the most important clashes tend to rank higher, even if other teams had more raw arguments.
