BP Drills and Practice Methods

Targeted exercises to improve your BP skills — from timed argument construction to flowing drills to mock rounds with feedback.

Individual Practice Drills

You do not need a full team or a tournament to improve at BP. Several drills can be done alone and will sharpen the skills that matter most in rounds.

The 5-Minute Argument Drill. Pick a random motion from an online motion database. Set a timer for five minutes. Write a complete argument: claim, warrant, example, and impact. Do this daily. Over weeks, you will notice your arguments become more structured and your examples more specific. Speed of argument construction is one of the most valuable skills in BP because prep time is short and you must often generate arguments during the round itself.

The Rebuttal Drill. Read or watch a BP speech online, then pause after each argument and give yourself 60 seconds to formulate a rebuttal. Write it down. Compare it to what the actual opposition said. This trains the skill of listening critically and responding precisely — the foundation of strong method.

The 15-Minute Solo Prep. Simulate a full 15-minute prep alone. Start with a motion, work through the phases (analysis, generation, development, opening lines), and then speak your case aloud to a wall or a recording device. Listening to yourself reveals problems that thinking never does — unclear transitions, underdeveloped warrants, or arguments that sounded good in your head but fall apart when spoken.
