Becoming Prime Minister

How Churchill came to lead Britain at its darkest hour — the political crisis of May 1940.

The Crisis of May 1940

When Germany invaded Norway in April 1940, the resulting military fiasco was blamed on Chamberlain, even though Churchill, as First Lord of the Admiralty, bore significant responsibility. The Norway Debate in Parliament on May 7-8 was devastating. Conservative MP Leo Amery quoted Cromwell at Chamberlain: 'In the name of God, go!'

Chamberlain resigned on May 10, 1940 — the same day Germany invaded France, Belgium, Luxembourg, and the Netherlands. The choice was between Churchill and Lord Halifax, the Foreign Secretary. Halifax was the establishment choice, but he recognized that a wartime leader needed to sit in the House of Commons and effectively ruled himself out.

Churchill became Prime Minister at age 65, telling the Commons: 'I have nothing to offer but blood, toil, tears and sweat.' Many in his own party distrusted him. The Conservative benches gave Chamberlain a warmer reception than Churchill for weeks.
