Backfile Research
How to mine previous seasons' evidence, topic papers, and camp files to build a stronger evidence base.
What Backfiles Are and Why They Matter
Backfiles are evidence collections from previous debate seasons, including camp files, open-source case documents, and topic-specific research compiled by debate institutes. Every major debate camp produces extensive research files each summer, and many teams and organizations make their files publicly available after the season ends.
Backfiles matter because debate topics often share underlying arguments across years. An argument about US hegemony, deterrence theory, or the social contract appears on nearly every policy topic. The kritik literature, international relations theory cards, and framework arguments you find in a 2019 file may be just as relevant in 2026. Smart researchers use backfiles to build a foundation of core arguments, then update the evidence with current sources.
