Asylum Procedures

How asylum systems work in practice — from initial application to final decision, and the vast differences between countries.

How Asylum Works

A person seeking asylum must be on the territory (or at the border) of the country where they want to claim protection. They submit an application, undergo screening, and attend an interview where they explain their fear of persecution. Decision-makers assess credibility, evaluate country-of-origin information, and determine whether the claim meets the legal definition.

Processing times vary enormously. Germany processed most Syrian claims in months during the 2015 crisis. The US asylum backlog exceeds 3 million cases, with wait times often exceeding several years. The UK backlog reached over 100,000 cases. These delays have devastating consequences — asylum seekers live in legal limbo, often unable to work, for years.
