The Future Combat Air System (FCAS), known in French as Système de Combat Aérien du Futur (SCAF), is a trilateral defense program led by France, Germany, and Spain to develop a sixth-generation air combat capability intended to enter service around 2040. It is designed to replace the French Rafale, the German and Spanish Eurofighter Typhoon, and eventually French carrier-based aviation.
FCAS is not a single aircraft but a system of systems. Its core elements include:
- A manned Next-Generation Fighter (NGF), with Dassault Aviation as prime contractor and Airbus as the main partner.
- Remote Carriers, a family of unmanned loyal-wingman drones developed largely by Airbus and MBDA.
- An Air Combat Cloud, a secure data-sharing and AI-enabled command layer linking platforms in real time.
