Bashar al-Assad is a Syrian politician who served as President of the Syrian Arab Republic from July 2000 until December 2024, when his government collapsed after a rapid offensive led by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) and allied factions captured Damascus. He succeeded his father, Hafez al-Assad, who had ruled Syria since 1970, extending Ba'ath Party and Alawite-led rule over the country for more than five decades combined.
Originally trained as an ophthalmologist in London, Bashar was not the intended heir; he was recalled to Syria after the death of his elder brother Bassel in 1994. His early presidency was briefly associated with the "Damascus Spring," a short-lived period of political discussion that was quickly suppressed.
Assad's tenure became defined by the Syrian civil war, which began in March 2011 after his security forces violently repressed protests in Daraa and other cities during the broader Arab Spring. The conflict drew in Russia, Iran, Hezbollah, Turkey, the United States, and Gulf states, and produced one of the largest refugee crises since World War II, with more than 6 million Syrians displaced externally according to UNHCR figures.
His government has been widely accused of war crimes, including the use of chemical weapons. The August 2013 sarin attack in Ghouta and the April 2017 attack in Khan Shaykhun were attributed to Syrian government forces by the OPCW-UN Joint Investigative Mechanism. Syria acceded to the Chemical Weapons Convention in 2013 under US-Russian pressure following the Ghouta attack.
After years of diplomatic isolation, Assad was readmitted to the Arab League in May 2023. However, in late November and early December 2024, opposition forces launched a surprise offensive from Idlib, captured Aleppo, Hama, Homs and then Damascus. Assad fled to Russia on 8 December 2024, where he was reportedly granted asylum, ending Ba'ath Party rule in Syria.
Example
In May 2023, Bashar al-Assad attended the Arab League summit in Jeddah, marking Syria's formal readmission to the bloc after a 12-year suspension over the civil war.
