Foreign policy

Bilateral posture, key relationships, and live diplomatic statements.

Foreign Policy

Seychelles' foreign policy centers on blue economy leadership, maritime security, and leveraging its strategic Indian Ocean position. The country hosts a US Coast Guard liaison office and an Indian naval facility on Assumption Island, reflecting its role in counter-piracy and maritime domain awareness in the western Indian Ocean. France, India, and China all compete for influence in Seychelles due to its strategic location.

The country is a champion of SIDS issues and has pioneered innovative financing mechanisms, including the world's first sovereign blue bond in 2018 and a debt-for-nature swap. Seychelles actively advocates for climate action, sustainable fisheries, and the interests of small island states in international forums.

MUN Delegate Guide

Seychelles is an ideal delegation for ocean and environmental committees. Despite its tiny population, Seychelles punches far above its weight on blue economy, ocean governance, and climate issues. Lead discussions on marine protected areas, sustainable fisheries, blue bonds, and innovative climate financing.

Align with SIDS, the African Group, and the Commonwealth. Seychelles can work with both Western and non-Western blocs due to its strategic neutrality in the Indian Ocean. Use your democratic credentials and high HDI to speak with authority on governance and development.

Build coalitions with Mauritius, Maldives, and other SIDS on ocean and climate issues. Seychelles can also engage with India and France on Indian Ocean security cooperation. Avoid taking sides in great-power competition in the Indian Ocean -- Seychelles' diplomatic value lies in maintaining relationships with all parties. Focus your energy on environmental leadership and championing innovative development solutions for small states.
