## Why it matters

The ISA World Congress serves as a critical forum for addressing pressing global challenges through a sociological lens. By bringing together researchers from around the world, the congress facilitates a deeper understanding of societal structures, cultural dynamics, and political processes. This interdisciplinary exchange is vital for developing informed perspectives on issues ranging from inequality and conflict to technological change and environmental sustainability.

The congress's location in Asia highlights the growing importance of the region in global sociological discourse. It offers a unique opportunity to explore social phenomena within an Asian context, enriching the broader academic conversation and challenging Eurocentric biases that may exist in some areas of social science. The insights generated at such events are crucial for policymakers and international organizations seeking to develop effective strategies for global cooperation and development.

Ultimately, the ISA World Congress contributes to the ongoing evolution of sociological thought and its application to real-world problems. The discussions and research presented here can influence academic curricula, inform public debate, and guide practical interventions aimed at improving human societies worldwide.

## How to prepare

For those preparing to engage with the ISA World Congress, a thorough understanding of the host country, KOR, is paramount. Researching its socio-political landscape, cultural nuances, and historical context will provide valuable background for appreciating the local perspectives that may be presented. Consider how KOR's unique developmental trajectory and its position in global affairs might shape the themes and discussions at the congress.

Participants should also consider the broader geopolitical context. Understanding current global trends, major international conflicts, and emerging social movements will enable more informed contributions to the discussions. Utilizing resources like the Council on Foreign Relations can provide a macro-level understanding of the international environment.

Finally, engaging with the core principles of sociological inquiry, such as those related to \What Is Stakeholder Mapping?\ and \Gender Dynamics Across Cultures\, will be beneficial. ### Global Sociology in Turbulent Times

The International Sociological Association (ISA), founded in 1949 under UNESCO auspices, has long used its World Congress to take stock of how the discipline responds to the dominant tensions of its era. The 2027 Congress arrives amid what many sociologists describe as a 'polycrisis': the lingering social aftershocks of the COVID-19 pandemic, accelerating climate disruption, war in Ukraine and Gaza, democratic backsliding in established and emerging democracies, deepening inequality, and the rapid diffusion of generative AI. These overlapping shocks have strained the post-1945 liberal international order and the institutions sociology has historically taken as its objects of study — the nation-state, the labor market, the family, the public sphere. The theme also reflects an internal disciplinary debate. Calls to decolonize and 'provincialize' sociology — building on the work of scholars such as Raewyn Connell, Sujata Patel, and Boaventura de Sousa Santos — challenge the field's historic anchoring in North Atlantic theory and demand greater visibility for Southern epistemologies, Indigenous knowledge, and non-Anglophone traditions. At the same time, sociologists confront methodological turbulence: digital data, platform-mediated social life, and AI-assisted research raise new questions about ethics, representation, and the boundary between observer and observed. The core dispute for delegates is therefore twofold: how should global sociology analyze a world in which the assumptions of stable institutions, linear modernization, and Western centrality no longer hold; and how should the discipline reorganize its own knowledge production — funding, languages, peer review, training — to remain relevant and legitimate. Today the debate is unresolved, with active contestation between universalist, comparative, and pluriversal approaches.

### Tourism, Travel and (Im)mobilities: Connections and Fragmentation in Turbulent Times

Tourism became one of the largest global industries of the late 20th century, accounting for roughly 10% of world GDP and one in ten jobs before 2020, according to the UN World Tourism Organization (UNWTO, now UN Tourism). The COVID-19 pandemic produced the sharpest collapse of international travel in modern history, with international arrivals falling by roughly 70% in 2020, exposing both the fragility of mobility-dependent economies and the deep inequalities embedded in who moves and on what terms. The recovery since 2022 has been uneven: leisure travel has rebounded strongly in many regions while business travel, certain visa regimes, and labor migration corridors remain disrupted. The sociological literature on mobilities, associated with John Urry, Mimi Sheller, and others, frames tourism as one node in a wider system that also includes labor migration, forced displacement, climate-driven relocation, and the immobilities imposed by borders, passports, and wealth. Today these tensions are sharpened by overtourism backlashes in cities such as Barcelona, Venice, and Kyoto; by climate impacts on coastal and alpine destinations; by hardened border regimes in the EU, US, UK, and Australia; and by record levels of forced displacement tracked by UNHCR. Digital nomadism, platform-mediated short-term rentals, and selective 'golden visa' schemes further stratify who counts as a welcomed traveler versus an unwanted migrant. The core dispute concerns how societies should govern mobility in an era of simultaneous connection and fragmentation: how to reconcile tourism-led development with residents' rights and ecological limits; how to align travel facilitation with restrictive migration policies; and how to address the carbon footprint of aviation alongside Global South demands for equitable access to mobility. The debate remains active across UN agencies, regional blocs, and host communities, with no settled framework.
