What is International Relations?

States, power, and the global system.

International Relations (IR) is the study of how countries interact — through diplomacy, trade, war, treaties, and international organizations. It's the field that tries to answer the biggest questions in world politics: Why do wars happen? How do countries cooperate? Who has power, and how do they use it?

The basic unit of IR is the state — a political entity with a defined territory, a permanent population, a government, and the capacity to enter into relations with other states. There are currently 193 UN member states, plus a handful of contested or partially recognized entities like Taiwan, Kosovo, and Palestine.
