Types of Government
Democracy, authoritarianism, monarchy, theocracy.
Political scientists classify governments along two main dimensions: who holds power and how much power they hold.
The Major Types
Democracy — citizens choose leaders through free elections with protected civil liberties. Subdivides into:
- Liberal democracy — elections + rule of law + rights protection (most Western countries)
- Electoral democracy — elections happen but rights/rule of law are weaker (some Latin American, African states)
- Direct democracy — citizens vote on policy directly (Switzerland's referendum system)
Authoritarianism — power concentrated, limited political competition:
- One-party state — China, Vietnam, Cuba
- Military junta — Myanmar post-2021
- Personalist dictatorship — North Korea, Turkmenistan
Monarchy — hereditary head of state:
- Absolute monarchy — Saudi Arabia, Brunei (monarch governs)
- Constitutional monarchy — UK, Japan, Spain (monarch reigns but doesn't govern)
Theocracy — religious authority governs:
- Iran — Supreme Leader (a cleric) holds ultimate power above the elected president
- Vatican City — the Pope is absolute monarch
