Research Is the Foundation

The quality of your case is limited by the quality of your research. No amount of clever argumentation can compensate for weak evidence or a shallow understanding of the topic. The best debaters spend far more time reading and cutting cards than they do writing case positions, because deep research generates arguments that no one else in the tournament has.

A literature review for debate is different from an academic literature review. You are not trying to summarize the state of the field — you are hunting for arguments. Every article you read should be evaluated through two lenses: what argument does this support, and what argument does this help me answer? The best researchers read with a strategic eye, always connecting evidence to positions they might run or need to respond to.

A Systematic Research Process

Step 1: Map the topic. Before diving into specific arguments, read broadly to understand the landscape. Start with overview articles, encyclopedia entries, and Congressional Research Service reports. Identify the major stakeholders, the key policy options, and the central points of disagreement. This map will guide all subsequent research.

Step 2: Identify the core affirmative cases. What are the two to four strongest plans or advocacy positions on the affirmative side? Research the evidence base for each. Read the foundational studies, the key think tank reports, and the most cited academic papers. This gives you both affirmative cases to write and negative positions to prepare against.

Step 3: Build negative ground. For each likely affirmative case, identify the strongest disadvantages, counterplans, and kritiks. Research the evidence for each. Your goal is to have at least two distinct negative strategies against every major affirmative position.

Step 4: Cut cards continuously. Do not wait until the night before a tournament. Set a daily research goal — even fifteen minutes of focused reading and card-cutting per day accumulates into a substantial evidence base over a season.

Organizing Your Evidence Files

An evidence file that you cannot navigate under pressure is useless. Organize your research into a clear structure: separate files or sections for each affirmative case, each disadvantage, each counterplan, and each kritik. Within each section, group cards by argument function: uniqueness, links, impacts, answers to likely responses.

Every card should have a clear tagline — a one-sentence summary of the argument the card supports. The tagline is what you read in the round; the card body is your evidence. A good tagline is specific and arguable: 'Economic growth is slowing — recession likely by Q3 2025' is useful. 'The economy is bad' is not.

Finally, maintain a 'to-research' list. Every time you encounter an argument you cannot answer, a source you need to read, or a gap in your evidence, write it down. The teams that win championships are the ones that systematically close their knowledge gaps between tournaments.
