The Presidency

The powers, limits, and evolution of the most powerful office in the world.

Constitutional Powers

Article II of the Constitution grants the President several explicit powers:

  • Commander in Chief of the armed forces
  • Treaty-making power (with Senate approval by two-thirds vote)
  • Appointment of federal judges, ambassadors, and cabinet members (with Senate confirmation)
  • Veto power over legislation
  • Pardon power for federal offenses

The President also delivers the State of the Union address and can convene or adjourn Congress in extraordinary circumstances.
