What Counts as a Real Extension

The extension is what separates BP from every other debate format. Closing teams cannot simply repeat or elaborate on what their opening half said — they must bring something genuinely new to the table. But 'new' has a specific meaning in BP. A new example supporting an argument the opening team already made is not an extension. A new statistic bolstering their existing point is not an extension.

A genuine extension is a new analytical contribution that shifts how the debate is understood. It can take several forms: a new argument that the opening team did not run, a new mechanism explaining why or how something happens, a new stakeholder group whose interests change the calculus, or a fundamentally different framing that recontextualizes the entire motion. The test is simple — if the opening team had never spoken, would your extension still stand as an independent, substantive contribution?

Five Types of Strong Extensions

Experienced BP debaters think in categories when searching for extensions during a round. The five most reliable types are:

1. The Missing Stakeholder — Opening argued about citizens and the state. You argue about the impact on international institutions, minority groups, or future generations — a group whose interests were completely absent from opening's analysis.

2. The Mechanism Shift — Opening said the policy works. You explain a different mechanism for why it works (or fails), introducing a causal chain they never considered.

3. The Principled Argument — Opening ran entirely practical arguments. You introduce a rights-based, justice-based, or democratic legitimacy argument that exists independently of the practical outcomes.

4. The Long-Term Frame — Opening focused on immediate effects. You analyze second-order consequences, precedent-setting effects, or how the policy reshapes incentives over time.

5. The Counter-Model — On opposition, you propose an alternative approach that solves the same problem differently, which lets you grant the problem exists while offering a competing solution.

Building Extensions During the Round

You cannot fully plan your extension during the 15-minute prep because you do not yet know what the opening teams will argue. The best practice is to prepare two or three possible extension directions during prep, then listen carefully to the opening speeches to identify which direction remains genuinely new.

During the opening half, take active notes on what analytical ground has been covered and, more importantly, what has been left open. If Opening Government focuses on economic arguments, the social and political dimensions are available. If Opening Opposition attacks the mechanism, the principled objection may be untouched. The closing Member of Government or Member of Opposition speech should explicitly signal the extension — often in the first 30 seconds — so judges immediately understand that new material is being introduced.
