The Atomic Bomb

The decision to use nuclear weapons against Japan — the military, moral, and geopolitical dimensions of history's most consequential weapon.

Hiroshima and Nagasaki

On August 6, 1945, the US dropped an atomic bomb ('Little Boy') on Hiroshima, killing an estimated 80,000 people instantly and up to 140,000 by the end of the year from injuries and radiation. Three days later, a second bomb ('Fat Man') was dropped on Nagasaki, killing approximately 40,000 immediately and up to 70,000 by year's end. Japan surrendered on August 15, 1945.

The decision was made by President Truman, who later said it was the most difficult decision of his presidency. The official justification was that the bombs shortened the war and avoided a catastrophic invasion of Japan. But the morality and necessity of using nuclear weapons against civilian populations has been debated ever since.
