Sudan's 2019 Revolution

How a popular uprising toppled Bashir and the fragile transition that followed.

The Uprising

In December 2018, protests erupted in the city of Atbara over bread prices and spread rapidly across Sudan. The Sudanese Professionals Association — a coalition of doctors, lawyers, and engineers — organized sustained demonstrations demanding Bashir's removal. Women played a particularly prominent role, making up an estimated 70% of street protesters.

On April 6, 2019, tens of thousands began a sit-in outside military headquarters in Khartoum. On April 11, the military removed Bashir from power after 30 years. But the revolution was far from over — the military established a transitional council that protesters rejected, demanding civilian rule.
