Why Winning Every Argument Isn't the Goal

Beginners believe they need to win every argument to win the round. Experienced debaters know that trying to win everything often means winning nothing well. Strategic concession — deliberately giving ground on a weaker argument to concentrate your time and credibility on a stronger one — is one of the most powerful tools in competitive debate.

Think of it this way: if you have six minutes to respond and your opponent has made four arguments, you can spend 90 seconds on each (underdeveloped across the board) or you can concede their weakest point, briefly mitigate another, and spend three minutes devastating their two strongest arguments. The second strategy wins more rounds because judges decide based on the most important arguments, not a tally of how many individual points each side won.
