Why You Must Negotiate

Not negotiating your salary is one of the most expensive decisions you'll ever make. A person who negotiates a $5,000 higher starting salary at age 22 earns over $600,000 more over a 40-year career (assuming standard raises compound on the higher base). And yet, studies show that fewer than 40% of people negotiate their first job offer.

Employers expect negotiation. In most industries, the first offer is not the best offer — it's the starting point. Hiring managers typically have a range approved, and the initial offer is usually in the lower half of that range. Not negotiating doesn't make you likable — it leaves money on the table that was allocated for you.

Think Total Compensation

Salary is just one piece. A complete compensation negotiation includes:

• Base salary — your fixed pay
• Signing bonus — one-time payment, often easier for companies to offer
• Equity/stock — options, RSUs, profit-sharing
• Bonus structure — performance bonuses, target bonus percentage
• Benefits — health insurance, retirement matching, life insurance
• Time off — vacation days, sick leave, parental leave
• Flexibility — remote work, flexible hours, compressed workweek
• Development — training budget, conference attendance, tuition reimbursement
• Title — affects future earning potential and credibility
• Start date — can be worth thousands if you need time between jobs

When the company says 'we can't budge on salary,' that's an invitation to negotiate everything else. Often, a $5,000 signing bonus, two extra vacation days, and a remote work policy are worth more than $5,000 in salary — and easier for the company to approve.

Worked Example: Countering a Firm Salary

You receive an offer: $90,000 base, no signing bonus, 10 PTO days. Your research says the role pays $95k-$105k. You ask for $100k; the recruiter says base is 'locked at $90k.' Instead of accepting, you negotiate the rest of the package. Here's the before/after:

The base never moved — but first-year value rose by roughly $8,000 in cash plus five vacation days, more flexibility, and a title that raises your baseline for the next negotiation. The lesson: 'the salary is firm' is rarely the end of the conversation. It's a signal to pivot to the components the company can approve more easily.

The Conversation Script

When you receive the offer: Express enthusiasm (genuine — you want this job), then buy time: 'Thank you, I'm really excited about this role. I'd like to review the full package — can I have until [date]?'

When you counter: 'I'm very enthusiastic about joining. Based on my research and the scope of this role, I was targeting a base salary in the range of $X-Y. Is there flexibility to get closer to that range?'

If they say the salary is firm: 'I understand the salary constraints. Could we look at other parts of the package? A signing bonus of $Z, or an additional week of vacation, would help me get to yes.'

The close: 'If you can do [specific ask], I'm ready to accept today.' Giving them a clear path to yes makes it easy to close the deal.
