Aristotle's Three Appeals

Aristotle identified three modes of persuasion. Logos appeals to logic and evidence - the tools of this course. Ethos appeals to the speaker's credibility and character - we are more persuaded by people we trust. Pathos appeals to emotion - stories, imagery, and language that make us feel rather than think.

All three are present in every effective communication. A scientist presenting climate data uses logos (the data), ethos (their expertise), and pathos (images of receding glaciers). A politician uses ethos (their track record), pathos (stories of struggling families), and logos (policy proposals with projected outcomes). The question is not whether rhetoric is used - it always is - but whether the rhetoric is paired with genuine evidence or substitutes for it.

When Persuasion Becomes Manipulation

Rhetoric is legitimate when it makes a good argument more compelling. Using a vivid example to illustrate a well-supported statistical trend is legitimate pathos. Citing your qualifications to establish credibility on a topic you genuinely understand is legitimate ethos.

Rhetoric becomes manipulation when it substitutes for evidence. Using a heart-wrenching story to bypass the question of whether a policy actually works is manipulative pathos. Claiming authority on a topic outside your expertise is manipulative ethos. Constructing an argument that sounds logical but relies on hidden fallacies is manipulative logos.

The test: if you strip away the rhetorical techniques, does a solid argument remain? If removing the emotional story, the credibility claim, and the elegant phrasing leaves an argument with no evidence, the rhetoric was doing the work that evidence should have done.

Worked Example: Same Appeal, Two Uses

Rhetoric is not the enemy of logic - misused rhetoric is. The test is always: strip the technique away and ask whether an evidenced argument survives. The same appeal can be legitimate or manipulative depending on whether it complements evidence or replaces it.

Applied. Take: "As a 30-year veteran of this force (ethos), I've held dying officers in my arms (pathos), so this surveillance bill will save lives (logos-shaped claim)." Strip the ethos and pathos and the logical residue is just 'this bill will save lives' - asserted, never evidenced. The credentials and the grief are real, but here they do the job that outcome data should do. Now compare: "Departments that adopted this exact system saw response times fall 18% in three peer-reviewed studies (logos); I've seen the difference on my own shift (pathos)." Strip the pathos and a genuine evidenced claim remains. Same speaker, same emotional register - opposite verdict, because the second case amplifies evidence instead of standing in for it.
