Rhetoric vs. Logic

The ancient tension between persuasion and truth — how rhetorical techniques work, when they are legitimate, and how to distinguish persuasion from manipulation.

Aristotle's Three Appeals

Aristotle identified three modes of persuasion. Logos appeals to logic and evidence — the tools of this course. Ethos appeals to the speaker's credibility and character — we are more persuaded by people we trust. Pathos appeals to emotion — stories, imagery, and language that make us feel rather than think.

All three are present in every effective communication. A scientist presenting climate data uses logos (the data), ethos (their expertise), and pathos (images of receding glaciers). A politician uses ethos (their track record), pathos (stories of struggling families), and logos (policy proposals with projected outcomes). The question is not whether rhetoric is used — it always is — but whether the rhetoric is paired with genuine evidence or substitutes for it.
