Reserve Currencies

Why the US dollar dominates global finance, what challenges it faces, and whether alternatives like the yuan or euro could replace it.

Dollar Dominance

The US dollar accounts for roughly 58% of global foreign exchange reserves, about 88% of foreign exchange transactions, and is the currency in which most commodities (oil, gold, wheat) are priced and traded. This gives the United States what former French President Valéry Giscard d'Estaing called an 'exorbitant privilege' — the ability to borrow cheaply, run large deficits, and project financial power globally.

Dollar dominance rests on several pillars: the size and openness of the US economy, deep and liquid financial markets, rule of law and property rights, the Federal Reserve's credibility, and the US military's role in global security. No other currency currently matches this combination.
