Rebuttal Strategy
How to structure the 1AR, NR, and 2AR to win close rounds through strategic argument selection.
The Art of Rebuttal
Rebuttals are where rounds are won. Constructive speeches build the house; rebuttals fight over it.
The 1AR (4 minutes)
The hardest speech. You must:
- Rebuild your case against NC attacks
- Extend your strongest offense
- Attack the Neg case
Triage ruthlessly. You cannot answer everything. Identify the 2-3 arguments that matter most and go deep. A common strategy: group Neg responses and answer them with one umbrella argument.
The NR (6 minutes)
The Neg's last speech. You must:
- Extend your best attacks on the AC
- Rebuild your NC against 1AR answers
- Begin weighing — tell the judge why your arguments outweigh
The 2AR (3 minutes)
The final speech of the round. Do not introduce new arguments. Your job:
- Crystallize — identify the 1-2 key issues the judge should vote on
- Weigh — explain why your arguments are more important
- Write the ballot — literally tell the judge: 'You vote Aff because...'
