Most Negotiations Are Won Before They Start

Research consistently shows that the single biggest predictor of negotiation success isn't charisma, confidence, or even experience — it's preparation. A study by the Harvard Negotiation Project found that negotiators who spent even 30 minutes preparing achieved significantly better outcomes than those who winged it.

Yet most people walk into negotiations with only a vague sense of what they want. Systematic preparation transforms you from a reactive negotiator into a strategic one.

The Seven Elements Framework

Developed at Harvard, this framework gives you seven dimensions to prepare:

1. Interests — What do you actually need? What does the other side need? Go beyond positions.
2. Alternatives — What's your BATNA? What's theirs? This determines your walkaway point.
3. Options — What creative solutions could satisfy both sides? Brainstorm before the negotiation.
4. Legitimacy — What objective criteria (market rates, precedent, law) support your position?
5. Communication — How will you frame your opening? What questions will you ask?
6. Relationship — What's your history with this party? How do you want the relationship after?
7. Commitment — What specific agreement are you hoping to reach? Draft it in advance.

You don't need hours — even 15 minutes working through these elements dramatically improves outcomes.

Worked Example: A Filled-In Preparation Worksheet
