This final lesson puts everything together. Below are four practice scenarios drawn from the types of situations you will encounter in competitive Security Council simulations. Each tests different skills: drafting, coalition building, veto management, and crisis response. Work through each one, thinking carefully about your country's real-world position and the strategic dynamics of the Council.

These scenarios do not have single correct answers. Real diplomacy is about finding workable solutions under constraints, and the best answers will demonstrate strategic thinking, country accuracy, and creative problem-solving.

Scenario 1: Nuclear Proliferation Crisis

A non-nuclear state has been discovered conducting secret uranium enrichment. The IAEA has confirmed the program exceeds peaceful-use thresholds. The United States wants comprehensive sanctions. Russia has economic ties with the country and opposes sanctions. China has abstained on past related resolutions but has signaled discomfort with a nuclear-armed neighbor.

Consider: What kind of resolution could pass? How would you calibrate Chapter VII language to satisfy the US without triggering a Russian veto? What role could elected members play in bridging the P5 divide? What if the country offers to allow inspections but not dismantle the program?

Scenario 2: Humanitarian Catastrophe

A civil war has displaced 4 million people. The government is blocking humanitarian aid to rebel-held areas. France and the UK want to authorize a cross-border aid mechanism without government consent. Russia argues this violates sovereignty. The Secretary-General has called the situation the worst humanitarian crisis in a decade.

Consider: Can you design a humanitarian resolution that Russia would accept? What precedent does the Syria cross-border mechanism (Resolution 2165) set? Would a presidential statement be a better first step than a resolution?

Scenario 3: Maritime Confrontation

Two countries are in a naval standoff over disputed territory. Both have warships deployed. Shots have been fired but no casualties reported. One country is an ally of China, the other is an ally of the United States. The General Assembly has called for restraint.

Consider: How do you draft a resolution that calls for de-escalation without favoring one side's territorial claims? What happens if China threatens to veto any text that mentions freedom of navigation? Could an Arria meeting with maritime law experts create pressure without a formal vote?

Scenario 4: Peacekeeping Mandate Renewal

A peacekeeping mission has been on the ground for five years. The host government wants it to leave, arguing the situation has stabilized. The UN Secretary-General's report says the situation has improved but warns of backsliding if peacekeepers withdraw. Russia and China support the host government's sovereignty argument. The P3 want to extend the mandate.

Consider: Can you negotiate a compromise mandate that begins drawdown while keeping enough capability to prevent backsliding? What benchmarks could trigger full withdrawal? How do you balance the host government's sovereignty with civilian protection?
