Position Paper Strategy
How to write a position paper that does double duty — impressing the chair and guiding your conference strategy.
Most delegates treat the position paper as a homework assignment — something to submit and forget. Strategic delegates use it as a conference planning tool and an early signal to the chair.
A strong position paper does three things simultaneously:
- Earns early evaluation points — chairs often start reading position papers before the conference
- Forces strategic clarity — writing your proposed solutions makes you walk into committee with a plan
- Seeds your resolution — your 'proposed solutions' section becomes the basis for your working paper
