The Power of Network Effects

Platform companies achieve dominance through network effects: each additional user makes the platform more valuable for all users. Facebook is useful because everyone is on it. Amazon's marketplace attracts sellers because it has buyers, and buyers because it has sellers. Google's search improves with more users because more queries generate more data to refine results.

Network effects create winner-take-all markets. In social media, search, ride-hailing, and e-commerce marketplaces, the leading platform tends to capture 60-90% of its market. This concentration is not just about size -- it is about the near-impossibility of competing once a platform reaches critical mass. Building a search engine that matches Google's quality requires data that only Google has, creating a self-reinforcing loop that economists call a 'moat.'
