Party Ideology & Platforms

How parties develop and communicate their policy positions, and the relationship between ideology and electoral strategy.

What Ideology Does for Parties

A party's ideology provides a coherent worldview that guides its policy positions, distinguishes it from competitors, and gives members a sense of shared identity. Conservative parties emphasize tradition, order, and market economics. Social democratic parties emphasize equality, welfare, and workers' rights. Liberal parties emphasize individual freedom, rights, and open markets. Green parties emphasize environmental sustainability and social justice.

However, ideology is not static. Parties adapt their positions in response to electoral incentives, changing social conditions, and internal debates. Britain's Labour Party under Tony Blair moved toward the center with 'New Labour,' abandoning nationalization and embracing markets. The US Republican Party shifted from free-trade internationalism under George H.W. Bush to economic nationalism under Donald Trump. Ideological flexibility is a survival mechanism.
