Two Speakers, One Strategy

In Public Forum, Policy, and British Parliamentary, you debate with a partner. The difference between two individuals who happen to be on the same team and two debaters operating as a genuine partnership is often the difference between winning and losing close rounds.

Good partnerships aren't about having two equally skilled debaters — they're about complementary strengths and seamless coordination. One partner might be stronger at research and evidence comparison while the other excels at persuasive delivery and cross-examination. The goal is to deploy each person's strengths where they matter most.

Dividing Responsibilities

Effective teams divide labor at three levels: before the round, during speeches, and in prep time.

Before the round, split case construction by expertise. If one partner understands the economics of the topic better, they should build the economic arguments. Divide evidence files so both partners know what's available but each 'owns' specific areas. Decide who speaks in which position — in PF, this means choosing who gives the constructive and who gives the summary/final focus based on skills, not just preference.

During opponent speeches, one partner should flow the speech while the other pulls evidence and begins drafting responses. This parallel processing is dramatically more efficient than both partners doing the same thing. Develop a system: the flowing partner marks arguments that need specific evidence, the evidence partner finds it and passes it over.

During prep time, decide the strategy together but divide the execution. One partner organizes the rebuttal order while the other writes transition language and voters. The worst use of prep time is two people staring at the same piece of paper trying to agree on wording.

When Partners Disagree Mid-Round

It will happen: your partner makes an argument you think is weak, or you disagree about which arguments to prioritize in the summary. How you handle these moments defines your partnership.

Rule 1: Never contradict your partner in front of the judge. If your partner made a strategic choice you disagree with, build on it rather than undercutting it. Saying 'as my partner mentioned' and then steering the argument toward your preferred framing is fine. Saying 'what my partner meant to say' signals disorganization and tanks both your speaker points.

Rule 2: Discuss strategy in prep time, not during speeches. Write a note during the speech: 'I think we should drop contention 2 and go all-in on 1 and 3.' Discuss it during your next prep period. Don't have a visible sidebar while the round is ongoing.

Rule 3: Defer to the person who's about to speak. If there's a genuine disagreement about strategy and prep time is running out, the person giving the next speech gets final say. They're the one who has to execute the strategy, and confidence in their own approach will produce a better speech than reluctant compliance with their partner's plan.
