The Oppo Book

Opposition research, known as 'oppo,' is the systematic investigation of a political opponent's public record, financial history, personal background, and past statements. Every serious campaign produces an 'oppo book,' a comprehensive document that catalogs potential vulnerabilities.

Good oppo research is not about digging up gossip. It is about finding contradictions between what a candidate says and what they have done, financial conflicts of interest, policy positions that are unpopular with the electorate, and past statements that reveal character. The most devastating oppo is documented with primary sources: court records, financial disclosures, voting records, and the candidate's own words on video.

Research Yourself First

The first rule of opposition research is: research yourself before your opponent does. Smart campaigns conduct exhaustive self-research early, identifying every vulnerability so they can prepare responses before attacks land. A candidate who is surprised by their own record has already lost the exchange.

Self-research also shapes strategy. If a candidate has a vulnerable voting record on healthcare, the campaign may choose to reframe the issue, inoculate early with a positive healthcare message, or simply avoid the topic. Knowing your weaknesses is as strategically valuable as knowing your opponent's.

Ethical Boundaries

Opposition research operates in a gray zone. Reviewing public records and past statements is universally accepted. Using private investigators to follow opponents or their families crosses a line most campaigns will not publicly acknowledge crossing. The release of hacked emails (as in the 2016 DNC hack) raises questions about whether campaigns should use stolen information. The ethical standard most professionals cite: if the information is true and relevant to the candidate's fitness for office, it is fair game. Personal matters unrelated to governance should be off limits.

What evidence supports my application? Mastery requires moving beyond abstract concept to specific cited evidence. Build the habit of finding 2-3 primary sources that ground your application of any concept.
What counter-arguments would the strongest opposition raise? Anticipating opposition is the single highest-leverage skill in competitive activities. The best delegates and debaters prepare for the strongest version of opposing arguments, not the weakest.

Develop a personal library of go-to sources for the concepts and issues that matter most for your work. For most MUN and debate competitors, the core library includes:

Primary documents: UN resolutions, treaty texts, government statements relevant to your committee or topic.
Quality secondary sources: think-tank reports (CFR, Brookings, CSIS, Chatham House), peer-reviewed journal articles, recognized news outlets.
Historical context: foundational books and articles on your topic area.
Recent developments: news in the last 90 days that affects your position.

Why Sustained Practice Matters

The difference between bronze-level and gold-level performance in MUN and debate is not raw intelligence — it is hours of structured practice. Recognized champions typically practice 5-10 hours per week between competitions, not the night before. Build sustainable practice habits, and your performance will improve cumulatively across seasons.
