Running Opening Opposition

How to respond to the government's case, frame the opposition narrative, and set your team up for success.

The Leader of the Opposition's Job

The LO must accomplish three things:

  1. Engage with the PM's case — directly respond to the definition, model, and arguments. Judges penalize opposition teams that ignore the government's material and just run their own case.
  2. Set the opposition framing — explain why the status quo is preferable, or present an alternative worldview. This framing should be broad enough that the Closing Opposition can also use it.
  3. Deliver at least one substantive counter-argument — not just 'the government is wrong,' but a positive reason to oppose the motion.

A strong LO speech often begins with a brief rebuttal of the PM's strongest point, then pivots to the opposition framing, and finally delivers an independent argument. This structure ensures engagement with government while establishing the opposition's own narrative.
