Nuclear weapons are the most destructive technology ever created. A single modern warhead can destroy a major city. The global arsenal — roughly 12,500 warheads (2024) — could end civilization.

Who Has Nuclear Weapons?

Israel maintains a policy of nuclear ambiguity — neither confirming nor denying its arsenal.

The Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT)

The NPT (1968) is the cornerstone of nuclear governance. It creates a grand bargain:

• Nuclear states (P5) agree to pursue disarmament
• Non-nuclear states agree not to develop nuclear weapons
• All states get access to peaceful nuclear energy

191 states are party to the NPT — the most widely adhered-to arms control treaty. But India, Pakistan, Israel, and North Korea are not (or withdrew).

Critics call the NPT a form of nuclear apartheid — it permanently legitimizes a small club of nuclear states while denying the same capability to everyone else.

Mutually Assured Destruction (MAD)

During the Cold War, the US and USSR developed enough weapons to destroy each other many times over. This created MAD — the logic that neither side would launch a nuclear attack because the response would ensure mutual annihilation.

MAD arguably prevented nuclear war for 75+ years. But it relies on rational leaders, reliable communication, and no accidents — assumptions that have been tested many times (the 1983 Able Archer scare, the 1995 Norwegian rocket incident).
