North Korea's Regime: The Kim Dynasty
How the Kim family built and maintained one of the world's most isolated and authoritarian states across three generations.
Juche, Songbun, and Total Control
North Korea's official ideology, Juche ('self-reliance'), was developed by Kim Il-sung as a blend of Marxism-Leninism, Korean nationalism, and a cult of personality centered on the Kim family. The state controls virtually all aspects of life: media, movement, employment, and even hairstyles have been regulated.
The songbun system classifies citizens into loyalty-based castes — 'core,' 'wavering,' and 'hostile' — based on the political history of their ancestors. This hereditary classification determines access to food, housing, education, and employment. An estimated 80,000 to 120,000 people are held in political prison camps (kwanliso), where the UN Commission of Inquiry found crimes against humanity including extermination, enslavement, and torture.
