Military Alliances

NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) is the most powerful military alliance in history. Founded in 1949 to counter the Soviet threat, it has grown from 12 to 32 members.

Article 5: Collective Defense

The heart of NATO is Article 5 of the Washington Treaty: an armed attack against one member is an attack against all. This means if Russia attacks Estonia, all 32 NATO members — including the US, UK, France, and Germany — are treaty-bound to respond.

Article 5 has been invoked once: after the September 11, 2001 attacks on the United States. NATO allies deployed to Afghanistan under Operation Enduring Freedom.

NATO Expansion: A Contested History

NATO's eastward expansion is one of the most debated topics in security studies:

• 1999: Poland, Czech Republic, Hungary join
• 2004: Seven Eastern European states join (including the Baltic states)
• 2009: Albania, Croatia
• 2017: Montenegro
• 2020: North Macedonia
• 2023: Finland
• 2024: Sweden

The Western view: Sovereign states have the right to choose their alliances. NATO expansion brought stability and democracy to Eastern Europe.

The Russian view: NATO expansion into Russia's historic sphere of influence is an existential threat. The US broke implicit promises made during German reunification.

This disagreement is central to understanding the Russia-Ukraine war and the future of European security.

NATO is the most famous alliance, but it is one of many. Comparing them shows how alliances differ in purpose, membership, and strength of commitment:

Two lessons stand out. First, not every "alliance" carries an Article 5–style automatic guarantee — AUKUS, for instance, is a capabilities partnership, not a defense pact. Second, alliances create the security dilemma: when NATO expands to feel safer, Russia builds the CSTO and rearms because it feels less safe, and vice versa. Alliances deter attacks, but they can also harden the divisions that make conflict more likely.
