Military Alliances

NATO, collective defense, Article 5.

NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) is the most powerful military alliance in history. Founded in 1949 to counter the Soviet threat, it has grown from 12 to 32 members.

Article 5: Collective Defense

The heart of NATO is Article 5 of the Washington Treaty: an armed attack against one member is an attack against all. This means if Russia attacks Estonia, all 32 NATO members — including the US, UK, France, and Germany — are treaty-bound to respond.

Article 5 has been invoked once: after the September 11, 2001 attacks on the United States. NATO allies deployed to Afghanistan under Operation Enduring Freedom.

NATO's Military Power

  • Combined defense spending: over $1.2 trillion annually (2024)
  • 3.5 million active military personnel across member states
  • Nuclear deterrent from US, UK, and France
  • Integrated command structure headquartered at SHAPE (Belgium)
  • Rapid response force (NATO Response Force): 40,000 troops deployable in days
