The Complete Analysis Framework

You now have a comprehensive toolkit for analyzing any argument you encounter. This workshop brings it all together. For any claim in media or politics:

1. Identify the argument structure: What is the conclusion? What are the premises? Are there hidden premises?
2. Check the evidence: Is the evidence relevant, sufficient, and from reliable sources? What is the hierarchy of evidence?
3. Check the logic: Is the reasoning deductive or inductive? If deductive, is it valid? If inductive, how strong is it?
4. Scan for fallacies: Are there relevance, weak induction, or presumption fallacies?
5. Check the numbers: Are statistics used correctly? Base rates, denominators, timeframes?
6. Assess rhetoric: Is the persuasion complementing or replacing evidence?
7. Consider what is missing: What counterarguments, evidence, or perspectives are absent?

Applying the Framework

Consider this argument from a political ad: 'Since my opponent took office, violent crime has risen 15%, grocery prices are up 20%, and three local businesses have closed. It is time for a change.'

Structure: The conclusion is 'vote for me instead.' The premises are three negative trends. Hidden premise: these trends are the opponent's fault.

Evidence: The statistics need verification (source? timeframe? base rates?). Are these trends local or national? Is a 15% rise in crime from 100 to 115 incidents or 10,000 to 11,500?

Logic: This is a false cause argument - trends that occurred during someone's tenure are not necessarily caused by their policies.

Numbers: Cherry-picked timeframe? Are grocery prices up 20% locally or nationally? What about other economic indicators?

Missing: What positive trends occurred? What caused the negative trends? What specifically would the challenger do differently?

Worked Example: The Seven Steps on One Headline

Take a viral post: "Cities that raised the minimum wage last year saw restaurant closures jump 12%. Higher wages are killing small business." Run the framework in order.

Verdict. The correlation may be real, but the argument is weak as stated: it offers no control group, no denominator, and no ruling-out of confounders like rent or inflation that hit all cities. A stronger version would compare matched cities that did and did not raise wages and report net business formation. The one-minute payoff of the framework is that you can say precisely why a claim is thin, not just that it 'feels off.'
