Managing Opposition Stakeholders

Strategies for engaging stakeholders who actively oppose your objectives, from neutralization to conversion.

Opposition Is Information

The instinct when facing opposition is to work around it — to isolate hostile stakeholders, minimize their influence, and proceed without them. Sometimes this is necessary, but it's rarely the best first move. Opposition tells you something important: either your proposal has genuine flaws that opponents have identified, your communication has failed to address legitimate concerns, or the opposing stakeholder has interests that can be addressed through redesign.

Research by Harvard Business School's Michael Watkins found that leaders who engaged opponents early and substantively achieved better outcomes than those who tried to marginalize them — because opposition that's ignored doesn't disappear, it goes underground and resurfaces at the worst possible moment.
