Left-Wing Populism
Left-wing populists define 'the people' in economic terms: workers, the middle class, the '99%.' The enemy is the economic elite — billionaires, Wall Street, multinational corporations. Their agenda typically includes wealth redistribution, universal healthcare, stronger labor protections, and financial regulation.
Examples include Bernie Sanders in the US, Podemos in Spain, Syriza in Greece, and AMLO in Mexico. Left populism tends to be inclusive in its definition of 'the people' — it invites immigrants, minorities, and marginalized groups into the coalition against economic elites. Its democratic risks are different from right populism: it may concentrate executive power, undermine property rights, or destabilize economies through rapid redistribution, but it less commonly targets ethnic minorities or undermines pluralism.
