Leading vs Supporting Roles

There's a persistent myth in MUN that you have to be the loudest voice in the room to win an award. In reality, chairs recognize two distinct types of excellence:

The Leader — anchors a bloc, drives the working paper, proposes moderated caucuses, gives frequent speeches. Visible and directive.

The Bridge — connects blocs, mediates disputes, brings compromise language, helps merge working papers. Less visible but often more influential.

Both can win Best Delegate. The question is which role fits your country, your committee, and your strengths.

When to Lead

Lead when:

• Your country is a major stakeholder (representing the US in a Security Council sim demands leadership)
• There's a leadership vacuum and no one is organizing your natural bloc
• The topic aligns perfectly with your country's expertise and you can set the agenda
• You have strong preparation and a clear resolution framework ready

When to Support

Play a supporting role when:

• Your country is small but strategically positioned (Singapore, UAE, Chile — influential beyond their size)
• Two blocs are deadlocked and you can be the mediator
• A strong leader is already anchoring your bloc — competing with them hurts the group
• You can add unique value through technical expertise or compromise language

The Strategic Hybrid

The most sophisticated approach: lead within your bloc but play the bridge between blocs. You organize your 5-country core group (leadership) but then negotiate the merger with the opposing bloc's working paper (bridge). This gives you visibility with the chair and influence over the final resolution.
