International Organizations

UN, EU, NATO, AU, ASEAN — who does what.

International organizations (IOs) exist because states can't solve every problem alone. Climate change, pandemics, trade, nuclear proliferation — these issues cross borders and require coordinated action.

IOs come in two main types:

  • Intergovernmental organizations (IGOs) — created by states, governed by states. Examples: UN, NATO, WTO, AU
  • Non-governmental organizations (NGOs) — private groups operating across borders. Examples: Amnesty International, Doctors Without Borders, the Red Cross

The most important distinction: IGOs only have the power their member states give them. The UN can't force the US to do anything the US hasn't agreed to.
