Influencer Politics

How social media influencers have become political actors, from endorsing candidates to shaping policy debates and spreading misinformation.

The New Political Class

Social media influencers now reach audiences that dwarf traditional media. The largest YouTube channels have more subscribers than the biggest cable news networks have viewers. When a political influencer with 10 million followers posts about a policy issue, they reach more people than most newspaper op-eds ever will.

This power increasingly translates into political influence. Joe Rogan's podcast reaches an estimated 11 million listeners per episode — more than any cable news show. His interviews with political figures can shift public discourse. During the 2024 US election cycle, both parties courted influencers aggressively, inviting them to conventions and providing exclusive access that was once reserved for credentialed journalists.
