Green Growth vs Degrowth
Can the economy keep growing while reducing emissions, or does sustainability require shrinking GDP?
The Green Growth Case
Green growth proponents argue that economic growth and emissions reductions are compatible — that we can 'decouple' GDP from carbon. Evidence includes: several countries (UK, Denmark, US) have reduced emissions while growing their economies; renewable energy costs have plummeted (solar down 90% since 2010); and clean technology creates new industries and jobs.
The green growth framework is the basis of most mainstream climate policy, including the EU Green Deal, the US Inflation Reduction Act, and China's clean energy industrial strategy. It promises a politically palatable path: save the climate without giving up prosperity.
