The Future of Truth
Scenarios for how societies might navigate an era when seeing is no longer believing.
Possible Futures
The interaction between AI and truth could develop along several paths:
Verified island model: Trust consolidates around a small number of verified sources and platforms that implement provenance standards. Everything outside these islands is treated as suspect. This preserves trust but concentrates power in the hands of verifiers.
Epistemic collapse: AI-generated content overwhelms verification capacity. Shared reality fragments into tribal information bubbles where 'truth' is whatever your community believes. This is the path of least resistance if current trends continue.
AI-assisted verification: AI itself becomes the primary tool for verification — cross-referencing claims, checking provenance, and flagging inconsistencies faster than human fact-checkers. This is promising but creates dependency on the same technology that caused the problem.
