Everyday Negotiations
Applying negotiation skills to daily life — from rent and bills to family decisions and customer service.
You Negotiate Every Day
Most people think negotiation is something that happens in boardrooms or car dealerships. In reality, you negotiate dozens of times a day — you just don't call it that.
- Deciding where to eat dinner with friends
- Splitting household chores with a roommate
- Getting a late fee waived on a bill
- Negotiating a lease renewal with your landlord
- Returning a product that's just past the return window
- Getting a better rate on your cable or insurance
- Agreeing on a vacation destination with your partner
Every one of these is a negotiation — two or more parties trying to reach an agreement. The same principles apply: understand interests, prepare alternatives, make trades, use legitimacy.
