Three Scripts That Work Everywhere

The 'Is that the best you can do?' script: When quoted a price — for a service, a repair, a subscription renewal — simply ask: 'Is that the best you can offer?' Said warmly, not aggressively. You'll be surprised how often the answer is no.

The retention script: When calling to cancel a subscription or service: 'I've enjoyed being a customer, but the current price is above what I can justify. What options do you have for existing customers?' Retention departments have discounts they can offer — but only if you ask.

The landlord script: When rent goes up: 'I'd like to renew, but the increase is significant. I've been a reliable tenant — always on time, no damage, no complaints. Can we discuss a smaller increase in exchange for a longer lease term?' You're offering something valuable (guaranteed occupancy, no turnover costs) in exchange for a concession.

Walk through the cable bill: you improve your BATNA (find a competitor's price), invoke legitimacy (an objective external number), and make a specific ask ('match it').
