Election Integrity
Gerrymandering, voter suppression, election security, international monitoring.
Elections can be undermined without stuffing a single ballot box. The modern threats to election integrity are subtler — and often perfectly legal.
Gerrymandering
Drawing district boundaries to favor one party. Two main tactics:
- Packing — concentrate opposition voters into a few districts (they win those by huge margins, waste votes)
- Cracking — spread opposition voters across many districts so they never reach a majority in any
In 2018, Wisconsin Democrats won 53% of the statewide vote for the state assembly but only 36% of seats. The maps were drawn by Republicans after the 2010 census. This is legal in most US states.
Most other democracies use independent boundary commissions (UK, Canada, Australia) to prevent this.
Voter Suppression
Making it harder for certain groups to vote:
- Strict voter ID laws — disproportionately affect minorities, elderly, and low-income voters
- Purging voter rolls — removing registered voters, sometimes erroneously
- Reducing polling places — longer lines in minority neighborhoods
- Limiting early/mail voting — harder for hourly workers
