The Digital Future of Geopolitics

Emerging technologies and their geopolitical implications — from quantum computing and undersea cables to digital currencies and the metaverse.

Emerging Technologies and Power

Several emerging technologies will reshape geopolitics in the coming decades. Quantum computing threatens to break current encryption standards, potentially exposing all digitally secured communications and data. The US, China, and the EU are in a race to achieve quantum advantage, and states are already harvesting encrypted data today to decrypt it once quantum computers are powerful enough — a strategy called 'harvest now, decrypt later.'

Undersea cables carry over 95% of intercontinental data traffic. Control of these cables is increasingly contested — China's HMN Technologies (formerly Huawei Marine) has emerged as a major cable-laying company, raising security concerns among Western nations. Cable sabotage, whether deliberate or accidental, could disrupt global communications and financial systems.
