Data Practice: Putting It All Together
Apply everything you have learned — evaluate claims, spot misleading statistics, and practice critical data analysis.
A Framework for Evaluating Data Claims
When you encounter a statistical claim, run through this checklist:
Source: Who produced this data? Do they have an agenda? Is the methodology publicly available?
Sample: How was data collected? Is the sample representative? How large is it?
Measure: What exactly is being measured? Are definitions consistent? Could the metric be gamed?
Context: What is the base rate? What time frame is being used? What comparisons would provide better context?
Causation: Is a causal claim being made? Is it supported by the study design? What confounders might exist?
