Building Your Daily Information Routine
A practical workshop for designing a sustainable, diverse, and effective personal news consumption habit.
Step 1: Audit Your Current Information Diet
Before building a better routine, you need to know what you're currently consuming. For one week, track every news source you encounter:
- What platforms deliver it? (Social media, apps, TV, print, email)
- What time of day do you consume it?
- How much time do you spend?
- How do you feel afterward? (Informed, anxious, angry, bored, overwhelmed)
- What layers are represented? (Local, national, international)
- Who owns each source?
Most people who do this audit discover three things: (1) They consume far more news than they realize, mostly through social media. (2) Nearly all of it is national political coverage. (3) The emotional impact is predominantly negative. If this describes you, you're normal — and you have room to improve.
